We’re going to have a half-day historical tour of Malacca today. See St. Peter’s Church (1710), Malaysia’s oldest surviving Christian church. Pass by Bukit China, also known as Chinese Hill, which is the biggest Chinese cemetery outside of China dating back to the 17th century. Before continuing on through the Portuguese Settlement, pause at the foothill to see the Sultan’s Well. Continue to see the renowned “Porto de Santiago” doorway and the remains of St. Paul’s Church, which are bordered by Dutch tombstones from the 17th century. The Melaka Museum and a few other government offices are currently housed in “Red Square,” which is the Salmon-Pink Dutch administrative buildings. Before going to a nearby restaurant for lunch, stop by Christ Church.
Following lunch, we go to the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, also known as the “Abode of the Green Merciful Clouds.” This temple is the only one in the area where you can discover the three main schools of local Chinese belief—Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism—all under one roof. Finally, stroll along Melaka’s Antique Street, which ends by the banks of the Melaka River, after visiting the Hindu Vinayagar temple and Kampung Kling Mosque. We’ll head to Port Dickson after the tour. (Approximate Driving Time/Distance: 2 hours/106 km)
